Creating a Relaxing and Inspiring Nursery

Did you know that designing a captivating nursery can enhance a baby’s learning and development? Keeping this in mind during your décor and nursery selections can help bring your ideal nursery to life while also benefiting your child! We’ve compiled five suggestions for how to create a visually engaging nursery.

Mixture Of Colours

We opted for soft, calming colours like pale blues and greens, creating a soothing and peaceful atmosphere within the first year. We also maximised natural light by keeping the windows uncovered, letting the sunshine stream in. It’s amazing how much sunlight can brighten a room and uplift the mood, especially when the winters make sunlight hard to come by, it really makes a difference.

Textures and Textiles

Incorporating various textures in the nursery can assist your baby in developing sensory recognition. Aim for elements like soft rugs, flowing window treatments, upholstered furniture, and a mobile hanging above the crib. This becomes particularly important as your child grows and starts to grasp objects, crawl, and walk.

You could experiment with nursery room accessories that incorporate different materials and textures, such as woven rugs, knit toys, fluffy comfy blankets and so forth.

Shapes and Sizes

Select a variety of shapes to enhance your nursery. The rugs and wall art will typically feature squares and rectangles but also seek out items in circles, triangles, and other forms. You can display books and decorative pieces on floating shelves, painting them in contrasting hues and adding photos or other decorations. Nursery lighting can showcase a range of shapes and designs. Patterns like polka dots and geometric art are also great options (again, our wall decals work perfectly for this!).

Different shapes can evoke distinct emotions. Circles often convey femininity or infinity, while triangles symbolise energy and stability. Hexagons reflect unity, and the less common rhombus can give a contemporary aesthetic.

Creating a Quiet Corner

Creating a designated quiet corner for reading, cuddling, and bonding was also essential. This cosy nook became our sanctuary, a place where we could connect with our baby and cherish those precious early moments.

As mentioned before, you and your baby need a little safe space for you both to regroup and calm down, but when they are old enough, it’s important that you leave their safe spaces and them alone in it until they are ready for you to come back. These safe spaces might just include listening to a song they like with their favourite blanket or toy.

Final Thoughts

Remember, the most important aspect of a nursery is that it feels safe, loving, and welcoming for both you and your baby. It’s a space that should evoke feelings of calm and joy, a place where you can both relax and bond.

Don’t get too caught up in trends or striving for perfection. Trust your instincts and create a space that reflects your own personal style and values. Incorporate meaningful touches, such as family heirlooms, handmade items, or artwork that holds special significance for you.

The process of designing and creating a nursery is a special one. Enjoy the journey, savour the anticipation, and cherish the memories you’ll make in this special space.
